Pre-Treatment Regulations
The Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2002 aim to reduce/prevent the use of landfill having negative effects on the environment.
From October 30th 2007 a further regulation was added, the "Pre-Treatment Requirements".
Waste will not be accepted at landfill unless it has been pre-treated. Waste will be considered pre-treated if it:

has undergone a physical, thermal or biological process including sorting that

also changes the characteristics of the waste; and
-
must do so in order to:

reduce its mass, or
-
reduce its hazardous nature, or
-
facilitate its handling, or
-
enhance its recovery
The easiest way to comply with this pre-treatment regulation is to remove recyclables from your general waste.
